Smart North Florida Deploys Real-Time Water Monitoring to Protect Coastal Ecosystems
Learn how WATR is using real-time water monitoring to protect coastal ecosystems in North Florida.

Neptune Beach, Florida - Smart North Florida has successfully deployed advanced real-time water monitoring technology in partnership with the cities of Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach to support compliance with recent State of Florida legislation that prohibits the “nonbeneficial” surface water discharge of treated wastewater by 2032.
The initiative introduces a sustainable solution to meet the deadline of this mandate by utilizing the discharge of the highly treated wastewater at strategic locations to help prevent saltwater intrusion into area creeks and drainage ditches. By creating a controlled freshwater barrier, the project strengthens natural defenses against increasing salinity levels that threaten inland habitats.
At the center of the deployment is the WATR real-time salinity monitoring unit, installed to continuously track water conditions in key upstream locations. The system delivers live data, dashboards, and automated alerts to the Smart North Florida environmental team, enabling precise identification of optimal discharge locations while minimizing ecological risk and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Real-time data is essential for making responsible environmental decisions. I’m very happy with the data and that it’s easy to track on the dashboard. We’re planning to analyse the data using the WATR monitor for the rest of the year. Installation was very seamless.
The project also represents a major milestone for WATR, marking the company’s first installation and first municipal client in the United States.
This deployment with Smart North Florida and the cities of Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach is a pivotal moment for WATR. Entering the U.S. market with a project that directly supports environmental protection and regulatory compliance is incredibly significant for us. It demonstrates that real-time water intelligence can play a meaningful role in safeguarding ecosystems while helping municipalities make confident, data-driven decisions. Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach set a strong precedent for how treated wastewater can be managed responsibly and strategically.
By combining regulatory compliance with proactive environmental stewardship, the Smart North Florida initiative demonstrates how technology and data can transform wastewater management into a tool for climate resilience and ecosystem protection.
The project now serves as a scalable model for other U.S. municipalities adapting to evolving wastewater regulations and seeking innovative, compliant, and environmentally responsible water management solutions.
